 Hassanal Bolkiah Muiz'zaddin Wad'daulah, the Sultan of Brunei, has a connection to Britain in several ways:


Bolkiah is the 29th sultan of Brunei and has been in power since 1967. He is the world's longest-reigning monarch and the longest-serving head of state. Bolkiah is also known for his lavish lifestyle and wealth, which is estimated to be $30 billion. He has a large car collection, including a gold-coated Rolls-Royce, and lives in the world's largest residential palace, Istana Nurul Iman.

  • Education
    Bolkiah was born in Brunei Town (now Bandar Seri Begawan) in 1946. He attended the Victoria Institution in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst in the United Kingdom. 
  • Accession to the throne
    Bolkiah became the 29th Sultan of Brunei in 1967 after his father, Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III, abdicated. He was crowned in 1968. 
  • Independence
    Brunei gained independence from Britain in 1984, and Bolkiah became the country's prime minister. 
  • Palace
    Bolkiah's residence, Istana Nurul Iman, is the world's largest residential palace, covering 2 million square feet. The palace's dome is covered in 22-carat gold. 
  • Car collection
    Bolkiah is known for his lavish lifestyle, including his car collection, which is reportedly valued at $5 billion. He owns a gold-coated Rolls-Royce with an open top and a platform for an umbrella.

    The throne house where Bolkiah was crowned is made from Burmese teak, with gold carvings, mosaics, and cut glass. The royal throne is six feet tall and made from hand-carved teak, with an inlaid gold leaf finish and gold velvet.
