Lagos Police Detain Youth Activists During Protest
Date: 16 May 2026
Summary:
According to local media reports, the Lagos State Police Command arrested several youth activists who were staging a peaceful protest in Lagos Island, demanding improved governance and better security measures. The protestors claimed their demonstrations were meant to highlight rising insecurity, unemployment, and poor social infrastructure.
Human rights groups, including the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), condemned the arrests, describing them as arbitrary and a violation of the right to peaceful assembly as guaranteed under Section 40 of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution. The police stated that the arrests were made to maintain public order but promised that the detained individuals would be released after questioning.
